ASOIAF: What happens when you kill an Ironborn?

It happens.
Balon Greyjoy killed one. His brother Urrigon had cut off his own fingers while doing ‘The Finger Dance’(pictured above), in which two Ironborn throw axes at each other and try to catch them—if your fingers get cut off, you lose(I don’t recommend this game), and the maester sewed the fingers back on in an attempt to heal them—which of course didn’t work. So Balon cut the maester’s fingers off and had them sewn back on( insert your own Greyjoy house motto joke here.)
Victarion Greyjoy( pictured above) also killed one when he failed to heal his infected arm, which he had refused treatment for originally because he didn’t trust the Maester. He also had this Maester, Kerwin, sodomized by the crew at some point for being, I don’t know, too much of a wuss to resist. Then he had him killed.
Ah, yes, the Ironborn.
But also Jon Connington had a maester killed when he took the Griffin’s Roost, his ancestral home and the maester kept trying to send ravens giving news of the attack. And of course Bolton men slew Maester Luwin when they burned Winterfell.
I assume the Citadel tends to be wary of sending maesters to some lords; otherwise, there don’t seem to be any signficant repercussions beyond the usual rule of law within the boundaries of the legal system. Which, of course, is crap.
Maesters are probably safer than most though, because they have very very rare and valuable skills in Westeros: they are too useful for most lords to kill.
