Tyrion knows he's dangerous.
At the council meeting where they discuss the allegations in STannis' letter that the Baratheon children are Lannister bastards of incest, it's Littlefinger who hatches the plot to spread a similar rumor that Shireen Baratheon is the bastard daughter of Queen Selyse and the mentally-challenged fool Patchface.
Tyrion thinks to himself:
This one is more dangerous than I knew.
AT several points, Tyrion thinks to himself that he needs to do something about Littlefinger, knowing that Littlefinger fingered him for the assassination attempt on Bran Stark.
I think the only reason Tyrion didn't get rid of him was that he found his counsel and way with money useful--and he was preoccupied with neutralizing Cersei's power.
Of course, even Tyrion did not realize the full extent of his plots.
