Game of Thrones(show): Why is Ser Davos so invested in Jon Snow?

I wondered the same thing: in the books, after all, Davos is nowhere near Jon Snow or Castle Black at this time. And I feel confident that Jon Snow's resurrection will not be handled like it is in the books, though I also think (now) that Melisandre will play a part in it.

I presume that somehow Davos has become, now that Tyrion has left Westeros, the all-knowing, all-wise, saintly character. He doesn't drink, but he knows things. So somehow he feels that only Jon Snow can save Castle Black and the rest of the world from the chaos of mutiny and corruption and the threat of the White Walkers. (Why he thinks this is unclear: the last time Jon Snow was in charge, he got fragged.)

OK, that's the best in-story explanation I can come up with. The meta-, real-world explanation is this:
  • They need a plausible way to get Melly out of her depressive funk
  • No one gives a pep talk like Davos! Something about the way his eyebrows and sideburns harmonize with the jut of his mustaches: you can tell he means it.
  • Liam Cunningham, the actor who plays Davos,  is on the payroll and has contractual stipulations that give him a specified amount of face-time/episodes: So they might as well use him other than a lesser character like Dolorous Edd or random Night's Watchman #137.
  • Davos knows her and they have a warm relationship dating back 5 seasons. Ok, so up until very recently he hated her and she did after all murder his precious Shireen by burning her at the stake while she shrieked in terror and pain and she tricked his king into dying a pitiful death. But SSHHHHHHHH. Let's pretend that never happened.
