Was Tywin Lannister a knight before he became a lord? Did he ever fight with his sword?

Tywin was a knight before he was a lord.
Above: Young Tywin and his father
Tywin was a knight and served and fought in the War of the Ninepenny Kings in the stepstones.
He personally knighted the squire Aerys, who would grow up to be the Mad King, Aerys II.
He also led the campagns that eradicated the Houses Reyne and Tarbeck and commanded the sack of King's Landing.

Tywin tends to hold the reserve as a general, observing a battle and lending his aid where he's needed(if he's needed.)
It stands to reason that he would have seen some action in the Greyjoy Rebellion as the Ironborn were a direct threat to Lannistown.

Considering his upbringing and  the prodigious battle talent of his son (Jaime one of the greatest living swordsman and Tyrion a terror with a battle-axe), I think it's reasonable to assume that he could hold his own in a fight.

But of course his real strength is in political maneuvering. He was made to command, not to serve.
